As China’s first high throughout satellite (HTS) Zhongxing-16 was successfully launched and put into commercial service in April 2017, the age of Ka broadband satellite communication has finally arrived!
It is understood that the ground segment network of Zhongxing-16, China’s first Ka HTS, is based on Gilat technology, covering most regions of China. With a network capacity of dozens of Gbps and a terminal rate up to 150Mbps, it heralds the new era of hundred megabits of Chinese satellite communication industry.
On October 25-27, 2017 China Satellite Application Conference, approved by Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of China, was held in Beijing New Century Hotel. Cogent Technologies Company (a supplier of Ka transmission solutions for Portable Satellite Stations), a subsidiary of CSS Group, joined hands with China Satcom Group (a supplier of satellite operation services) as the exhibitors during this event. A temporary stage was set up in the exhibition area to demonstrate real-time communication uplink of Ka satellite, providing the audience with an opportunity to personally experience Ka satellite’s excellence performance. Perfect transmission between Cogent’s Ka portable satellite station and Zhongxing-16 was demonstrated on the site.
Excellent transmission performance
As one of the first Chinese companies to launch Ka portable satellite stations, Cogent has tested and optimized their products repeatedly. During the demonstration, Cogent Ka portable satellite station performed well in real-time dynamic uplink, which can be evidenced through a few specific parameters: In the SCPC mode, at an 8Msps inbound symbol rate, a bit stream of 25Mbps is achieved, and the video is clear and smooth without any delay.
Portable application mode
Thanks to the compactness of Ka terminals, Cogent Ka portable satellite stations can be deployed flexibly and quickly, especially in regions where ground networks are not easy to build, such as tourist attractions and venues for outdoor sports event or large-scale activity. It can be widely used in the fields of radio and television news collection, HD video conference, emergency communication, etc.
Background
China Satellite Application Conference is a famous international meeting in the field of satellite application both at home and abroad, and the largest annual event in trade in terms of information amount and number of participants (about 600). By combining keynote speeches, device exhibitions, satellite technology workshops, and round-table discussions, it serves as an open platform for industrial people to discuss the development trends of satellite applications such as communication, broadcasting, remote sensing, navigation, and positioning. With a history of 19 years, the conference is now playing a significant role in driving China’s satellite applications and communications between domestic and foreign enterprises and users.
China Satcom Group is the only Chinese satellite operator that owns and can independently control civil communication and broadcast satellite resources. The company plans to deploy higher-capacity Ka HTSs in the future, so as to form a satellite communication network covering the whole territory of China and Asia-Pacific region, thus meeting broadband communication needs in line with Broadband China and the Belt and Road strategies by 2020.
